My work is non-representational mixed-media monoprints and oil paintings on panel or canvas, sometimes with the inclusion of paper, or other materials for texture. The paneled surfaces and some paper pieces are prepared with gesso first to create a texture before applying the oil. I then use markings or "gestures" of graphite, charcoal, or pastel over a monoprint, oil on masonite, or paper to unite the compositions and give structure to the works.
The work is non-representational with the emphasis on color and composition. I tend to use repeated forms which seem to either float over or be buried under other layers. The forms come out of dreams and things I have seen while traveling the world. Monoliths in the southwest or stupas in the rice fields of Asia. The work and palette seem to have an Asian aesthetic with a hint of the southwest influence, no doubt derived from my travels throughout southeast Asia and from the years of residing in New Mexico. While the word "abstract" conjures up a no boundaries, free-form of expression, it is still to me all about composition, imagery, and exploration into color. It is simply the absence of recognizable objective form.
